About Us
History of the Jewish Preschool for the Community
In 2005, our Director Hannah Greenberg realized that the Roanoke Valley was missing a multicultural preschool. With the help of the congregations of Temple Emanuel and Beth Israel Synagogue she opened the Jewish Community Preschool to offer a comprehensive multicultural preschool experience while promoting an understanding and love of the tenets of Judaism. Over the course of 20 years, JCP grew and in 2025, with Hannah’s leadership, JCP was able to evolve into a more inclusive preschool, solely under Temple Emanuel, that is able to serve the entire Roanoke Valley. With this in mind, The Jewish Community Preschool became the Jewish Preschool for the Community (JPC). The focus of JPC is the personal development and growth of each child, as well as building their positive self-image. We strive for each student to feel good about who they are and to be excited about whom they can become. Children are allowed to explore a wide variety of activities with an abundant amount of materials provided for them. Each child is given many opportunities to learn, share, respect the feelings of others, and get along in a group of peers. We are positive that your child will thrive in the loving environment created within our preschool.
Preschool Philosophy
The mission of JPC is to help families nurture and educate their children in an environment rich with Jewish values. We welcome children of interfaith families, and of non-Jewish families, who are comfortable with the program’s Jewish focus. We work with ages five months to five years old. The preschool is child-centered with hands-on approaches to learning. Children are given opportunities to develop physically, socially, cognitively, academically, emotionally, and spiritually. Teachers serve as guides, helping children make their own discoveries. Children are encouraged to perform tasks independently. We scaffold learning to help all students strive for independent growth.
